Scrappy Lucky Dog

After spending a year in Australia, a friend was returning home to Europe and deciding what to pack and what to leave behind.

What shall I make with these leftovers?
During the year, she was inspired to learn to crochet but it was a busy year with little time to complete any projects. Consequently, she had a little bag of half-finished bits and pieces, not worth adding to the airline luggage weight limit as she was unlikely to finish them.

Have you been there? Where you start a project that seems like a good idea at the time, only to lose enthusiasm later?  I think that's where my friend was at.

She gave me a parting gift of a little bag of yarn scraps: unlabelled, unidentified and various weights, colours and fibres.

This is what I have done with them so far.

Scrappy Lucky Dog sits on a navy background. It is light brown with blue safety eyes. Its right floppy ear is black on the end. Its front right foot and back left foot are white. The curved, tapered 'waggy' tail has a white patch where it meets the body.

The pattern is Lucky Dog by  Deb D'Zio, featured in the book Crochet One-Skein Wonders: 101 Projects from Crocheters Around the World (Durant & Eckman 2013)

I am thinking of using some of the scraps to make a nice collar or other accessories for this Scrappy Lucky Dog or perhaps make a playmate.

    Oh my God! He is sooooooo cute. I have lotsa scraps and once my arm is better I can see making a few of these. Often I make izzy dolls with scraps, or little gnomes, or tiny ornaments for the christmas tree but more and more crochet is calling me. After making the two monkeys earlier this year with scraps I feel an urge to keep going with other animals.

      Yes, I remember your monkeys, Mary-Anne - cheeky monkeys! One of my friend's real life puppies saw the Scrappy Lucky Dog toy and got very excited so I will probably make another one for that puppy as well. Between us we can quickly create quite the menagerie, I'm sure! :-)

      Hi Meredith!
      Yes, it certainly is a case of 'puppy love'. The intention is to have no scraps left over at all - a scrappy challenge. I am trying to be very disciplined by restricting my crochet to whatever is in the existing stash in order to save money and care for the environment.
      Nice to see you are still around the blogosphere and thank you for taking time to say hello. I miss your posts when you are away. x

    Oh he is soo sweet! Lots of personality. My mum used to make long-legged rabbits out of yarn scraps 😊

      Hi Pam! You have reminded me:

      There's a great book by Hisako Okawa called "Long-legged Friends: Crochet Creatures to Create and Cuddle" published in 2012. It gives the basic schematics for all sorts of animals with long stripy legs and bodies. Do you have any photos of your mum's handmade long-legged rabbits?

      I am about to embark on another friend for Scrappy Lucky Dog with the remaining yarn scraps. Your comment got me considering the long-legged friends. Thanks for the reminder! :-)
