Beanies to Berets Exhibition 2019 + Textile Expo: Call for Artists

Have you heard about the City of Onkaparinga's "Beanies to Berets" exhibition?
(If not, you had better check out some earlier blog posts on the subject - listed and linked at the end of this one.)

This exhibition has been run annually since 2017 thanks to the amazing and dedicated work of Kaye Oliver and Helen Herde who have helped to organise the exhibition, dozens of artists and hundreds of beanies!

Do you want to join in the fun this year?

Here's the latest information on this year's event which will incorporate a one-day
"Textile Expo" which I imagine would be similar to last year's "Creative Textiles Weekend" where textile artists and producers can show and sell their products directly to the public.

Installing Anzac Day Crochet at Brighton Jetty

Visitors to Brighton Beach, South Australia, can now observe a beautiful Anzac Day tribute created by Dianne Schroeder.  It was a privilege to spend an hour with some lovely ladies, helping them to put up the banners made up of hundreds and hundreds of crocheted poppies.

Grey billowing clouds hover above the horizon of St Vincents Gulf. The water is calm. In the foreground, along the esplanade, are two mesh banners with the words "Lest we forget" and "Anzac" arranged in red poppies that have been knitted or crocheted. Each banner has a poppy border. Between the banners is a large stone with commemoration plaques on them relating to the jetty's history. The Brighton jetty can be seen on the left jutting out into the gulf. On the jetty one can see a communications tower in the shape of a ship's crow's nest, a sunshade and a curved sculpture that plays musical notes when the wind blows through it. A person and dog are walking on the jetty towards the shore.

Access All Areas: Mad March and Access To Arts

Mad March

Access to Arts

That's quite enough alliteration for now!

A circular piece of crochet worked in a spiral of double crochet stitches (USA single crochet) with two black eyes and a smiley mouth embroidered on it. A black thread and a yellow thread can be seen coming from the crocheted piece on the right hand side.
The face of a 'busy bee'
because that's what I have been!
(Stay tuned for more news about
this project in future blog entries.)

A Little Splash of the Surf Art Exhibition

The long, thin, horizontal banner is pinned beneath two windows on the side of an old limestone building. It reads: "SURF ART EXHIBITION Celebrating twenty five years of surf culture 14 December 2018 - 28 January 2019. Facebook: onkaparingacity.com/arts or 8326 5577 Onkaparinga Arts." The Surf Exhibition logo appears on the left hand side of the banner. The heritage building is painted cream on the top half with a heritage brown colour for the lower portion of the building and the roof guttering. A blue horizontal stripe demarcates the cream and brown. A blue sky is seen in the top left corner.

Recovery Mode

Festival Theatre ticket for the Kitty Flanagan show called "Smashing"

Today is very quiet as I recover from the night before.
It is the Sunday after the Saturday night in the city.
I'm sure we've all had one of those!

But it's not what you think.

Pretty tame, really, but for a body like mine, an evening out without a nap in the afternoon beforehand is the equivalent of partying non-stop through a long weekend with no breaks.  Like a 'smashing' fun party, it was worth it for the experience and the memories but it will take a while to recover.

Sigh … Yes, there are beds to be made, dishes and laundry to be done and a house to tidy and a week to plan. Do you think I am physically up to those tasks? No!

So the next best thing to do is to laze around and catch up on blogging!
(Yes, it has been quite a while!)

Knock, knock. Hello?

Anybody home?

That’s how it feels around Lupey Loops at the moment, in more ways than one because I’ve either been physically out (not at home) or I’ve been so tired and addled with brainfog (from being out and about) that I’ve felt like “the lights are on but nobody’s home” in my head!

Fun at the Beanies to Berets Exhibition and Sale (Part 2)

"The devil is in the details."

There's nothing like an exhibition to inspire creativity.

At the Onkaparinga Arts Centre, the Beanies to Berets Exhibition and Sale
gave plenty of design ideas for crocheted hats.

The attention to detail in finishing can turn an average hat
into something extraordinary.
From left to right: knitted and felted handspun wool with 'dreadies' by Alexis Morrison, red mohair jester hat by Sharyn Brady & white hat with polka dot veil and black flower by Kaye Oliver.

Let's look at the different finishing techniques on display at 'Beanies to Berets'. It is amazing how a simple embellishment can provide style and character to handmade creations.

Fun at the Beanies to Berets Exhibition and Sale (Part 1)

There were so many amazing handmade hats at the Port Noarlunga Arts Centre's 'Beanies to Berets' Exhibition that I kept going back to have another look
(and touch and try on).

It was a super place to find a piece of wearable art to call your very own.  There were beanies and berets to please everyone, from the most conservative to the artistic and crazy-coloured!

Photo-luminescent & Solar Yarns

This week I have come across a project that combines science, architecture and yarn in very exciting ways.

Last year, Maker Faire Adelaide sparked my imagination about combining modern technology with yarn and textiles; e.g. potential applications for conductive thread and sensor technology.

This year, the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) PS1's Young Architects Program will present a project that takes these ideas to a whole new level and embodies many of the values and interests of Maker Faire participants; e.g. socially and environmentally responsive, use of recycled materials, robotics, digital design, 3D printer technology etc.

Today is Remembrance Day.

Last year, I collated crocheted poppy patterns on a quest to find the best.

Today, Lynn Berry of the 5000 Poppies project was interviewed on Adelaide radio.

Art Exhibitions June‒August 2016

A wooden easel holds a large dot painting of an Aboriginal spirit figure.

I've been lucky enough to visit three art exhibitions this year, two of them in one month alone!  While these do not include crochet specifically, the variety of work can serve to inspire creativity in all sorts of crafts.  If you ever feel like you are in a crochet design rut, I can highly recommend a visit to a gallery or exhibition to stimulate and rejuvenate your creative spirit.

What a Busy Month!

A collage of the photos which appear in this blog post plus the photo of magazines and rainbow scarf from an earlier blog entry during August.
A collage of August activities.
What a busy month August 2016 has been!

I'm not sure if it was a month of productivity or stupidity because there was so much going on. Some was forced upon me but much was of my own making.

Flower Power Exhibition, Adelaide 2016

After much anticipation, I was lucky enough to see Prudence Mapstone's "Flower Power" exhibition for myself, in real life, when it came to Adelaide as part of the 'Stitches & Craft Show' in May 2016.

This post is full of photos of the amazing crochet and knitting work that makes "Flower Power" so awesome.  Greetings and thanks go out to Prudence, Stephen and Cat who kindly gave me permission to take as many photos as I like and to share them here.  Enjoy!
