A Little Splash of the Surf Art Exhibition

The long, thin, horizontal banner is pinned beneath two windows on the side of an old limestone building. It reads: "SURF ART EXHIBITION Celebrating twenty five years of surf culture 14 December 2018 - 28 January 2019. Facebook: onkaparingacity.com/arts or 8326 5577 Onkaparinga Arts." The Surf Exhibition logo appears on the left hand side of the banner. The heritage building is painted cream on the top half with a heritage brown colour for the lower portion of the building and the roof guttering. A blue horizontal stripe demarcates the cream and brown. A blue sky is seen in the top left corner.

Come and look inside!

Along the left edge is a vertical banner which reads "ArtsCentre" in bold, blue, overlapping capital letters. Beyond the banner one can follow the footpath to rest on a wooden bench under a tree or continue to the cafe and shops. The verandah of a cafe can be seen next to the banner and under the below the tree canopy in the picture.

There are worse things you could do than visit
Port Noarlunga, a scenic part of South Australia to Adelaide's south. This is where the Onkaparinga River meets Saint Vincents Gulf. The township is filled with eateries, antiques, gift shops and galleries.

On Gawler Street you will find the Onkaparinga Arts Centre (formerly the Port Noarlunga Institute and Library), currently housing the 2018 Surf Art Exhibition.

Here's a little 'splash' of what you will see inside:

A selection of artworks (left to right): painted surfboard, surf photograph, mixed media sculpture, painting, metal sculpture, woodworked pieces, painted surfboard, embellished denim jacket, crocheted bikini, painted surfboard, painting (part). On the wall in the background above and centre is a foundation stone or plaque of the building. The writing is blurred.
Alongside paintings you will also find photography, sculpture, textiles
and crafted items, oh, and surfboards of course!

Do you see what I see?
Look! Over there! In the spotlight!

A crocheted bikini!

Close up of a coral-pink-coloured crocheted bikini top modelled by a white mannequin (with no arms!) The cups are shaped like rounded triangles, the lower portions are solid crocheted triangles and the top sections are filet crochet lace finished with a scalloped border. The ties are crocheted cords.

The Surf Art Exhibition is a popular annual event with many entries. Works are carefully curated and displayed across all three gallery spaces in The Arts Centre.

View through a blue framed doorway, down a polished wooden floorboard corridor with white walls. In the distance is another blue framed doorway in the centre of which one can see a light mannequin torso in the spotlight wearing a coral pink bikini.
From the rear Red Rover linear gallery,
a series of doorways leads visitors towards
the Onkaparinga main gallery space
where a crocheted bikini can be
seen in the spotlight.

I was so excited to see my crochet displayed so prominently in the main 'Onkaparinga' gallery space.

For those entering The Arts Centre via the linear 'Red Rover' gallery, the bikini is framed by a series of doors inviting people towards the main gallery.

Take a journey through to decide which of these artists you will vote for in the "People's Choice" category:

Tracey Atkinson
Hannah Bailey
Susan Belperio
Jenny Berry
Shaun Burnett
Joshua Coulter
After entering the previous blue framed doorway, the view from the corridor shows polished wooden floors, whitewashed walls with artwork displayed. On the left wall one can see a painting of a shoreline in blue and sand colours. Straight ahead is a double doorway framed by windows in blue frames. The left door appears closed with a pot plant in front of it. The right doorway is open to reveal a denim jacket and a crocheted bikini on the far wall of the main gallery.

A surfboard leans against the staircase in the foyer of The Arts Centre. The surfboard is white with a black central stripe running from tip to tip. The brand logo Tomo is written on the left of the stripe and another logo is printed on the top right of the stripe. The surfboard is standing vertically. It's cover which is solid grey with red piping edges is hung horizontally from the balustrade. There is a small printed notice displayed to the left of the surfboard explaining the Tomo surfboard and cover together is the People's Choice prize donated by Coopers. The red Coopers logo is at the bottom and the Surf Art Exhibition logo is at the top of the notice.

and me!

It is a privilege to have my work chosen for display and in such talented company.

Most of the works in the exhibition are for sale, including my bikini which is fully lined and ready to wear.

The Launch on 14 December 2018 was great fun. The Arts Centre was packed with art lovers, artists and people passionate about surf culture.

I made new friends and people partied afterwards to the fabulous sounds of local musicians: Ciaram Granger who is an international singer/songwriter and blues/folk guitarist, and mexican surf cowboy rock ensemble Chica Chica Electrica. View photos of the musicians on Facebook thanks to Tim Lorence Photography.

The Surf Art Exhibition

The bikini bottom is solid crochet with elasticised sides. Both top and bottom are embellished with shell patterns.

The making of this bikini deserves a blog post all its own.

    1. Thank you Jo! I was so amazed when I saw how beautifully everything was displayed. There are some fabulous works. I wish I had the funds to buy a number of them. When it came to the People's Choice Award, I had a lot of trouble picking just one. So many worthy pieces. We will discover the winner at the end of the exhibition.

    1. Thank you for the compliment, Helen. I am so glad it was chosen because a lot of time and effort went into it sourcing the correct swimwear materials and drafting the sewing templates for the lining etc. It was a learning curve.
